Unforgivable
A 17 month old boy was beaten to death for “acting like a girl.”
Let that digest for a moment.
A child… a baby was brutally murdered because his caretaker had ideas about gender that filled him with so much hatred that he was willing and able to kill.
Although I find his beliefs about gender appropriate behaviors ridiculous, it isn’t what I take issue with here. What bothers me is that we, who consider ourselves to be a modern and enlightened society, still have the capacity to kill… not in defense, not in war, but out of hate. We can still look at our fellow human beings, adults and children, and blind ourselves to their shared humanity, letting our belief in a certain way of being override our understanding of the value of life.
I know it isn’t universal. I know that the man who committed this crime is likely mentally ill… but still I wonder if it doesn’t say something unfortunate about our capacity for cruelty.
